Ezer Weitzman's "Black Spitfire"

Ezer Weitzman was a fighter pilot, the first commander of the H'eyl Ha Avir (Israeli Air Force), and later Prime Minister of Israel. He flew this plane as a personal transport in the 50s and 60s. Currently on display at the at the Israeli Air Force Museum at Hatzerim AB, just southwest of Beersheba, It still is occasionally flown at airshows.

The kit is the new Airfix 1/72 Spitfire Mk.IX, probably the best 1/72 scale Spit IX currently available. The markings are from an old Microscale IAF sheet. Paint is PollyScale Night Black with Tamiya gloss clear brushed by hand

This aircraft is also on display at the IAF Museum in Israel. The kit is the old Kovozavody Prostejov (now known as KoPro / KP) 1/72 Spitfire Mk.IXLF from Czechoslovakia. The kit dates back to the 1970s. The decals are from a Czech decal sheet for Israeli Spitfires from the 80's. Paint is standard British day fighter camouflage using Polly Scale paint.

These are the first two models I've competed this year.

Italeri 1/72 scale B-26K/A-26A "Counter-Invader": This kit is a hold-over from last year. Kit decals. Finish is rattle can and Airbrush, then touched up by hand. Camouflage colours are Testor's Model Master and Polly-scale acrylic. Black is spray can from Wal-Mart. OOB except for True Details resin B-26K wheels and Minimeca stainless steely hypodermic tubing for the nose gun barrels.

Revell 1/78 (Box scale) B-57B "Canberra": The first kit started and finished this year. Original molds for this kit go back to the late '50's. Currently available as an SSP release. This is a 30 year old "Air Commando" series kit bought from the sale table at the LHS. Previous owner had carved the pilot figures out of the one-piece cockpit. Cleaned up seats, added decal parachute harnesses and instrument panels. Some putty and sanding needed to fill seams at wing roots and tail.

Basic black paint again is rattle can from Wally-World. Decals from Italeri (yellow flash on tail) and Airfix (all the red markings)1/72 B-57 kits. The Italeri kit reds were not opaque enough and went almost invisible against the black. National insignia were Microscale. Gloss finish was several coats of Aeromaster clear semi-gloss applied with brush.

I started playing Dungeons & Dragons when it was still three digest sized books. I still have them. This was my introduction to role playing and fantasy games as I had been playing board wargames since my middle teens. In a way, gaming helped me though late adolescence and early adulthood by giving me an outlet for my imagination. Gamers like SF fandom allowed me to discover that I was not alone, there were other folks who were like me. I spent many nights exploring new and different worlds. Good times.

Marietta IPMS had their monthly meeting today. Since the meeting was on the 39th anniversary of the Apollo 1 fire, it was decided to have a "Everybody Build a rocket" theme. At the October meeting, Mike Idacavage, James Corley and I came up with a plan. We had another motivation. The club has one member, Mack Cobb, who for some unknown reason, has a problem with rocket models. It has gotten to the point where he puts a special line item in the meeting agenda "for the rocket geeks" (as opposed to the "real modelers", I suppose) and he is always going on about "not another rocket". Mack Coaches High school football, so he misses the meetings during the fall. So we planned to get everyone to build some sort of rocket model and have the "all rockets" meeting on the first meeting he made after football season. Also enlisted in the conspiracy was Dr. Bob, the club secretary, who sent out meeting reminders to everybody but Coach with reminders about the theme.

Here are the models I brought. I built 6 of them especially for this meeting.

The victim, captured as he came in the door and saw the "Rocket Garden." To add insult to injury, in a flurry of ballot box stuffing, my Nike Hercules won model of the month, and Mack won the door prize, an Apex 1/144 Sputnik kit, which he then gave to one of the boys.

For Christmas, Linda bought me a copy of One Six Right, a 2005 documentary about Van Nuys Airport, the busiest General Aviation airport in the country. The overwhelming thread that runs through the film is that local airports are a precious non-renewable resource that is being depleted at the rate of one a week. The Los Angeles area has gone from fifty-some small airports to nine. Special note is made of the fate of Chicago's former lakeside airport, Miegs Field, which was destroyed in the middle of the night when Mayor Daley ordered bulldozers to cut large X-shaped trenches in the runways with out warning anyone and in violation of an agreement the city had with the FAA. Several nearby former airports are shown.

The majority of the film is composed of wonderful footage of all sorts of airplanes that operate from the airport. Everything from piper cubs to Classic biplanes. Cessnas to helos. Warbirds to big bizjets. The airport was the center of aviation in California. Aviation records were set and movies, including Casablanca were filmed there. Marilyn Monroe was discovered working an a plant there. There is archival footage going back to the opening of the airport in 1927, through the 30s, 40s, 50s through the present. Manufacturers including Aero Spacelines and Air National guard operations are covered Lots of local pilots, including celebrities and aviation pioneers are interviewed. All accompanied by a wistful original piano/guitar soundtrack.

Its a rare film that gets me choked up. Its even more rare that a documentary brings a tear to my eye. One Six Right did both. Highly recommended.

It will be showing on Discovery HD on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and Several times in January.

Finally boke down and upgraded my OS from Win98SE to Win2000 Pro. had to track down and load drivers for the Nvidia video card, Download the latest version of Firefox, and re-activate DVD xCopy. The most frustrating thing is the system will not recognise my Soundblaster Live 5.1 card. I try to load the cd and windows BSODs and if I download the driver file from Creative it states that "There is no Sound Blaster card installed in the system. ARRRGGGHH!

The Master Chief Speaks . .

Found today this on SteelNavy's Discussion Forum. A good couple of laughs; they transcend the individual service.

One day, the Command Master Chief was invited to the Officer's Club with the base CO to eat lunch. When they entered the main dining room, they found the place was quite crowded. They did notice three Lieutenants sitting at a table with two empty chairs, so the Captain asked them if they could join them.

They promptly invited them to join them. They ordered lunch and joined them in conversation as they ate. At one point, the Master Chief mentioned that he had observed characteristics about many officers from which he could determine the sources of their commissioning.

The Lieutenants were eager to hear about this and asked if he could tell how each of them had been commissioned.

The Master Chief turned to the Lieutenant on his left and said he went through ROTC. The Lieutenant confirmed that was correct and asked how he had noted this. The Master Chief replied that the Lieutenant, through his conversation, seemed to have a strong
academic background but limited military experience.

The Master Chief then told the Lieutenant on his right that he had gone through OCS with previous enlisted service. The Lieutenant confirmed that this was correct and also asked how he had determined this. The Master Chief said, again through his conversation, that the Lieutenant seemed to have a firm military background and a lot of common sense.

The Lieutenant across the table from the Master Chief asked if he had determined his source of commission. The Master Chief replied that the Lieutenant had graduated from the United States Naval Academy. The Lieutenant stated that was correct and asked if he had noticed his high level of intelligence, precise military bearing, or other superior qualities acquired at the United States Naval Academy. The Master Chief replied that it was none of these that led to his determination.

He had simply observed the Lieutenant's class ring while he was picking his nose.

And then . . .

The same Command Master Chief walked by the office of one of these Lieutenants (I'll let you guess which one) and overheard a rather boisterous argument between that Lt. and an Ensign. Upon seeing the Master Chief the Lt. invited him in and asked him to settle the argument.

The Lt. explained that after a comfortable two years of marriage he was of the opinion that making love was 10% work and 90% pleasure.

The Ensign explained that he was due to be married soon and was of the opinion that making love was 90% work and 10% pleasure.

The Master Chief needed no time to think about this. Looking at the young officers as only a Command Master Chief could, he explained "Gentlemen, the way I see it, making love has to be 100% pleasure. If there was any work involved, an enlisted man would be asked to do it."

A report on getting water from...diesel exhaust? The Army is working on a system that extracts drinking water from military vehicle tail pipes.

Hamilton Sundstrand has modified two Humvees with prototype systems to extract the water from the engine exhaust. It can pull a gallon of water from every two gallons of fuel burned. The water is run through a series of filters that successively clean it until it is cleaner than most city tap water, and it is even chilled by the vehicle's a/c system. The downsides are: The system weighs about 500 pounds, You can only get water when the engine the system currenly 75-200 gallons of water before they have to be changed, and the engine has to stay running to get any water at all.

However, thay are also working on a system the size of a small fridge that will pull water out of thin air. This system makes about 600 gallons of potable water a day, even in the driest of deserts. Another poetntial user is NASA, who expect it to save the up to $10,00 a pound cost to lift water to orbit.

Saw this on Hyperscale a while back. Besides the obvious connectin to one of my hobbies, think about how much impact this man's inventions have had on modern life.

All HScalers and, for that matter, modelers all over the world should take off their hats bow their heads and engage in a moment of silence for William Lester who died at the age of 97 on Saturday March 12, 2005.

According the NY Times obit (from which I quote liberally), he revolutionized the plastics industry with his design for an automatic molding machine 70 years ago. Lester took a mere 10 weeks in 1935 to develop what became known as the Lester machine. based on longstanding methos for shaping rubber, it injected molten plastic into a cavity formed by engraved metal slabs that jouined together, much like a waffle maker. Using hydraulics, his device applied thousands of pounds of pressure to shape the plastic in seconds.

Other so-called injection machines existed, but they were smaller and often hand-cranked. They could take several minutes to create a molded part, while Lester's machine could finish in as few as six seconds.

With rubber supply lines blocked in WWII, Lester's innovation took on crucial significance and helped place the nascent plastics industry at the forefront of American manufacturing.

Sixty years later, injection molding remains one of two methods for producing palstic products; the other (according to the article) is extrusion, generally used for large or lengthy products (I bet that vacuform modelers might have an opinion on a third method).

Born in Brooklyn on Jan.14 1908 to immigrant Russian-Jewish parents, his father a blacksmith. Lester was still in school when he started designing molds and casting machines. He graduated in 1928 from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering.

In 1939 he founded the Pyro Plastics Corporation, which became a leading producer of injection molded plastics. After selling Pyro in 1972, he turned his attention to tamper proof packaging (Okay, so even though we now know who to blame for our frustration in opening up all kinds of packages and medicine bottles, consider the fact that we're less prone to being poisoned and our small children are less likely to swallow deadly stuff thinking it's candy).

We all enjoy this maddening hobby of building models because of Mr.Lester and his miraculous injection molding process. It's gratifying to know a bit of its background and the industry's innovators, such as Mr.Lester.

I'd have thougth that I scored more southern, I guess growing up as a service brat exposed me to more "outside" terms than I thought. A couple of the question simply do not fit. For #10, "What do you call an easy class?" My answer is a CRIB course. Also #11 ""Route" rhymes with..." Consider this sentence "I'm going to route you on Route 2." The verb I pronounce the same as "rout", but the noun I pronounce as "root." I wonder if that would skew the results if more options were there.

Dragon and His Tail Being Repainted

the Colings Foundation is repainting thier B-24. When they started touring the plane was painted in the markings of the "All American" from the 15th Air Force (Mediterranean Theatre). They then repainted her in the spectacular markings of "The Dragon and His Tail" in honor of the Pacific Liberator crews. Now they are going for an 8th Air Force Bomber, "Witchcraft" from the 467th Bomb group, 790th Bomb Squadron. This plane completed 130 combat missions. very cool.
